NCSHA Statement on the Passing of Representative Walorski — NCSHA
WASHINGTON, DC — The National Council of State Housing Agencies is deeply saddened by the passing of Representative Jackie Walorski, who was one of the United States Congress’ most dedicated and effective champions for affordable housing in recent times. Congresswoman Walorski’s advocacy for the Housing Credit and Housing Bonds, the two most important federal programs for financing new homes and apartments for low-income families, was second to none.
She was one of the earliest cosponsors of the Affordable Housing Credit Improvement Act when it was first introduced in the 115th Congress. She was an original cosponsor of the bill when it was reintroduced in the 116th and was the lead Republican sponsor in the 117th Congress. Congresswoman Walorski’s leadership was key to congressional enactment of the 4 percent minimum rate for Housing Bond-financed Housing Credit properties in 2021 — one of the most significant legislative improvements to the credit in its nearly 40-year history.
Congresswoman Walorski’s expertise in affordable housing was personal. She expressed both her passion and expertise in housing’s importance to family and community in terms that everyday people and members of both parties could understand and relate to. As we mourn her loss, we are ever more committed to continuing her cause.
